Love and Respect to We Can for hosting a great event last night!
I had so much fun last night at We Can's art show, held at Hailey's Cafe! It felt great to attend a community event that gave local artists the opportunity to showcase their creativity. With Photography and mixed media art on the walls, as well as live performances, We Can's event had a really positive and supporting atmosphere. I ordered the Choco-Peanut butter shake and it was absolutely delicious. I can't wait to go back to Hailey's and try some more of their food. The highlight of the night was when the band The LA River Swim Team gave a shout out to their vecinos who had come to see them play, now thats community! I will definitely be there at their next event and you should too. Keep up the good work We Can! Heres a few pictures I snapped during the live performances, enjoy.

Merch Monster is a graphic design and screen printing studio in Wilmington. It is a local, independent business that is owned by two Wilmington natives. Merch Monster was started in January 2010. The owners are Miguel Garcia and Armando.
This is what Miguel had to say about his company:
Our main focus is the music industry, working with artist and record labels. However, we find ourselves working with local businesses as well. We hope to become one of the premier screen printers, and graphic designers for the LA music scene and across the country. Both Merch Monster's owners are former musicians, Armando still performs with his group, and is in the process of producing his second album. Armando and myself joined forces and became business partners right after graduation. We're both inspired by music and art and hope to help as many musicians as possible by providing them high quality merch (merchandise).
I wish Armando and Miguel lots of success with their new company! It is great to see so many locally owned business in Wilmington starting to open.

Greening the Ports: Clean Air in Our Lifetime?
BREATHE LA President and CEO Enrique Chiock welcomed an audience of more than 50 community and business leaders to the inaugural BREATHE LA Pollution & Solutions event held June 19th. The panel discussion was the first of six salons dedicated to in-depth dialogue on climate change, environment, and personal and business roles towards improving air quality and quality-of-life in Los Angeles County. Panelists included Dr. Ralph Appy, Port of Los Angeles; Dr. Robert Kanter, Port of Long Beach; Tom Politeo, Sierra Club; and Jesse Marquez, Coalition For A Safe Environment and featured Q&A responders Romel Pascual, Associate Director for Environment Office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Bianca Román, Office of Long Beach Vice Mayor Bonnie Lowenthal; and Stephanie Stone, Coro Southern California.

This summer 2010, One Imagination offers ¡YA BASTA! / Enough is Enough!: Summer Youth Organizing Institute, a program building the leadership and power of youth ages 13-19 in the South Los Angeles, South Bay/Harbor, and Long Beach area. Through political education and organizing skills, youth will receive the resources and tools to exercise their power as leaders through campaign development, community building, advocacy, and direct action organizing.
¡YA BASTA! / Enough is Enough!: Summer Youth Organizing Institute is an intensive summer youth leadership and organizing program that provides local middle school and high school students with the skills necessary to resist injustice and oppression within their communities. Through nontraditional teaching methods including interactive workshops, group discussions, guest speakers, field trips, readings, and hands on experiences, youth will learn the basics of direct action organizing, community building, campaign development, and see how these tactics and strategies have been applied in movements all throughout the world present and past. ¡YA BASTA! / Enough is Enough! provides a historical foundation of U.S. and global resistance to key issues directly connected to young people and demonstrates methods of how to resist and organize alternatives.

Coalition for a Safe Environment (CFASE) in Wilmington
Today I will be visiting Jesse Marquez, Jr. at the New CFASE building! I'm really excited to see the result of all the hard work that has been put in. There will be an Open House which we will let our readers know about once we have all of the information. For those of you who don't know, Jesse Marquez, Jr. is a community activist. He is a Wilmington resident and has been fighting the sources of pollution in Wilmington for many years. The CFASE also played a big part in the proposal of the Wilmington Waterfront project.

The Western Museum of Flight is a non-profit, educational institution dedicated to preserving and displaying aircraft history and artifacts of Southern California's aviation heritage. The Air Museum's educational programs give children an opportunity to see and touch the airplanes that made aviation history. The Air Museum offers an inside look at completed and in-progress aircraft restoration projects. The Western Museum of Flight's collection includes numerous Warbirds, aircraft and target drones, piston and jet aircraft engines, aircraft components, aircraft ejection seats, World War II instruments, aircrew accessories, and an extensive model aircraft collection.
On the runway there is a YF-17, the prototype of the FA-18 currently used by the Navy and the Marines. There's also an A-4 Skyhawk jet, the same type of plane used in "Top Gun" and the primary jet trainer for the Navy.
Inside there is a display of about 100 model airplanes, aircraft parts, engines, ejection seats visitors can sit in and a large collection of pictures and memorabilia. Everything in the museum has been donated by aviation buffs, and visitors often can watch restoration work in progress.

San Pedro hospital to provide free asthma care to Harbor Area residents

Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro will provide free asthma care to residents in the Harbor Area thanks to a grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
Funded with money from a settlement between the AQMD and the BP Carson refinery, the pulmonary health program at the medical center will conduct screenings, training and follow-up care for at least 1,000 uninsured or underinsured at-risk adults within a 10-mile radius of the refinery.
The AQMD and BP in 2005 settled a variety of air quality violations that spanned several years, including those for increased emissions and inadequate inspection and maintenance of above-ground storage tanks, AQMD spokesman Sam Atwood said. Of the $81 million settlement, $30 million was to be set aside over a 10-year period for community projects.
The hospital will work to identify people with asthmatic symptoms at health fairs and small clinics in Wilmington, Harbor City, Torrance, San Pedro, Carson, Lynwood and Gardena.
The program will provide free services through the end of the year, and officials hope the funding will continue beyond 2010. Appointments are required, but the services are free.

The free event will include over two dozen local entertainers, organizations and government entities that make up the "green" community in Long Beach and surrounding areas. These groups are active participants in environmental stewardship and are excited to share their practices with the public.
Bring family and friends for entertainment,workshops, booths, artists and activities! The theme of this year’s festival is “turning the tide”, celebrating the transition into becoming a more eco-friendly and sustainable city.

The Los Angeles Harbor College hosted their Annual Student Art Exhibit Reception on May 12th and ongoing until the 28th. I decided to take a little stroll over to the Fine Arts Gallery in between classes today to see the displays. It was a bright and sunny day with enough natural light to make up for the lack of photographic quality of my antique Samsung cell phone. (I can’t wait to get my Minolta XK up and running!).
